Using a Merkur safety razor for the first time can be a daunting experience. People are not used to shaving with a razor blade that has no protective bars or strips over the top that can do a serious amount of damage if not used correctly. There isn't anything to worry about though if you a careful and learn the correct technique to use. A Merkur safety razor should be held very lightly and should never be pushed down onto the skin. Pushing down will result in shaving irritation and possible cuts. It should also never be moved side to side as this could cause the blade to cut the skin - the razor should always be moved in a straight direction. The angle that the Merkur razor is held at is also important. It should be held so that the blade is almost paralel to the skin so that the razor blade glides through the hair.
